EXTRABURG, France, June 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ – The International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) is pleased to announce that the renowned Japanese cellular biologist and international leader in research Yoshihiro Yoneda will take the burden of the president of the World Organization of Life Sciences.

Yoneda will be the seventh president in the 35-year history of the HFSPO, succeeding Shigekazu Nagatawho led the institution from 2018 to 2024.

Established by the G7 in 1987, the HFSPO supports pioneering and interdisciplinary research in life sciences by promoting and assisting research. It is funded by 16 of my countries, including the European Commission. The research proposals of the HFSP are evaluated by peer review and only the most innovative and revolutionary researches are funded, all in international collaboration. The HFSP has awarded more than 4,500 prizes to more than 8,500 international scientists. From the beginning of the program, 29 laureates with the HFSP have received the Nobel Prize.
Yoneda was nominated by the Government of Japan, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and confirmed unanimously during the June meeting of the Patronato de la HFSPO , celebrated this year Washington, DC
He is professor emeritus of the University of Osaka y President of the Fundación de Investigación de Infermedades Microbianas de la Universidad de Osaka (Fundación BIKEN). From 2015 to 2022, he directed the National Institutes of Biomedical, Health and Nutrition Innovation. He was also director of the Centro Collaborador de la Organización Mundial de la Health for Nutrition and Physical Activity.
Yoneda maintains an extensive relationship with the HFSPO. He received two research reports from the HFSP in 1998 and 2001 which allowed him to carry out important research into the molecular mechanisms of nucleocytoplasmic transport.
