Munich / Shenyang. The BMW Group is systematically implementing its electrification strategy and will launch the new BMW iX3 before the end of 2020. Serial production of the BMW brand’s first pure electric model will begin at the factories of the BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) joint venture. in China at the end of summer as planned: BBA Plant Dadong will produce the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) with a 100% electric powertrain for the global market. The first of these electric vehicles will be delivered to customers later this year.
The tests required for type approval of the new BMW iX3 have now been successfully completed and the results have been presented to the authorities in the main car markets. “This is the first time we have completed the entire co-teaching process for an all-electric model in China and Europe at the same time. The staff of our test team tackled this unique challenge with great care and efficiency,” said Arno Keller, Head of BMW iX3 Development. More than 340 hours of testing, as well as 7,700 kilometers of test driving, had to be completed within four weeks. .
In parallel with this, preparations were made for the production of the BMW iX3 in Shenyang. BBA has been building pre-production BMW iX3 cars at the Dadong plant in Shenyang since the middle of last year. The 200th pre-production model recently rolled off the assembly line and began test driving on Chinese roads, allowing development and test engineers to make final adjustments.
“We are right on schedule with our BMW iX3 pre-production cars and will start standard production at the end of the summer, using advanced technologies such as custom installation of the new high-voltage battery and artificial intelligence to monitor the components,” explained Robert Küssel, plant manager of BBA Dadong . “We are also producing a fully electric BMW iX3 and a BMW X3 with an internal combustion engine on the same production line. This allows us to achieve high efficiency and flexibility in production,” continued Küssel.
With the new BMW iX3, the BMW Group adds another electric vehicle to its portfolio that will not only reach new customer groups, but will also enter the market at a time when demand for electric vehicles is growing significantly. Based on the internationally successful BMW X3, the electric car combines the versatility and powerful performance of a premium mid-size sports utility vehicle with innovative drive technology for zero-emission driving pleasure. The BMW X3 is the brand’s first model available with both conventional petrol and diesel engines, a plug-in hybrid system or a pure electric drive mode. This “Power of Choice” approach allows the company to respond to the diverse needs and preferences of its customers around the world and maximize its impact in reducing carbon dioxide emissions globally.2.
The BMW iX3 is already equipped with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, including a drivetrain with a highly integrated electric motor, electronics and transmission in a central housing. This significantly reduces the installation space and mass of the drive technology relative to the power generated and offers greater flexibility for the installation of new electric powertrain components in different vehicle derivatives. Another highlight is the electric motor, which no longer requires the use of rare earths and ensures that the BMW Group is not dependent on their supply.
The fifth-generation electric drive also includes new and more powerful high-voltage batteries. Thanks to their modular and scalable design, they can be used flexibly in the respective vehicle architecture and at the respective production sites.
With a range of around 440 kilometers in the WLTP test cycle (preliminary data), the BMW iX3 paves the way for BMW eDrive technology, which will also be used in the BMW i4 and BMW iNEXT models from 2021 onwards.
