A monk. The highly automated driving level 3, which allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel and temporarily divert their attention from the road, will soon be available in the new BMW 7 Series BMW Personal Pilot L3 is the name of the new function that elevates a person behind the wheel from the task of driving at certain conditions and controls for him the speed of the car, the distance from the vehicle in front and the position in the lane. This new option can be ordered for the new BMW 7 Series (with the exception of the i7 eDrive50 and i7 M70 xDrive)* starting in December and will be installed in cars from next March.
Designed to take over the entire driving task with level 3 capability as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the highly automated driving function will be offered exclusively in Germany at a price of €6,000 (incl. VAT).
This innovative technology allows the driver to concentrate on other tasks in the vehicle when driving at speeds of up to 60 km/h. (37 mph) on highways with separate lanes. Thanks to a particularly advanced sensor, this is the first system of this type that can also be used in the dark.
The introduction of Level 3 functionality in BMW 7 Series models will make the BMW Group the first automaker to offer both Level 2 advanced driving functionality in its product range, where hands can be taken off the steering wheel and positioned comfortably. Level 3 system BMW Highway Assistant already offers a highly innovative SAE Part 2 automatic driving function in all new models of the BMW 5 Series unique feature: Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation. This function was primarily designed for long-distance use in the new BMW 5 Series, allowing the driver to adopt an extremely relaxed driving position. When driving at up to 130 km/h. (81 mph) this additional function of steering assist and lane control can control the speed of the car, the distance to the vehicle in front and the steering of the car.
The important difference between level 2 and 3 is that with level 2 (partially autonomous driving) the responsibility is always with the driver. Whenever BMW Highway Assistant is used, the driver must keep an eye on what is happening on the road and be able to continue driving at any time. This element is constantly monitored thanks to a smart attention camera.
BMW Personal Pilot L3 for highly automated driving level 3 in the BMW 7 Series offers the driver to concentrate on secondary tasks in the vehicle, away from what is happening on the road. In a BMW 7 Series with BMW Personal Pilot L3 enabled, customers will be able to edit e-mails, for example, or participate in phone calls more thoroughly while traveling at up to 60 km/h (37 mph). Furthermore, they will be able to take advantage of digital services during the trip, for example to stream videos from various sources on the central screen. This makes the new BMW Personal Pilot L3 the ideal solution for making the most of time spent in slow traffic or queuing on daily motorway journeys.
The symbols that appear on the screen behind the steering wheel indicate whether the BMW Personal Pilot L3 is available. The function is activated and deactivated with a button on the steering wheel. During the operation, the customer must still be ready to resume the driving task at any time, i.e. Visual and audible signals tell the driver to regain control. If the driver does not react as required, the vehicle will stop in a controlled manner.
The Live HD map with precise routes is constantly aligned with highly accurate GPS locations and works with 360° sensors to ensure accurate positioning and monitoring of the area around the vehicle. The live HD map is always up to date thanks to regular updates. In the new BMW 7 Series, this functionality is technically supported by a new software stack, a powerful computing platform and a 5G connection to the BMW Cloud. In addition to the cameras, vehicles with BMW Personal Pilot L3 are also equipped with the latest generation of ultrasonic and radar sensors and a highly sensitive 3D lidar sensor to monitor the area around the vehicle and road conditions.
This technology package makes the BMW Personal Pilot L3 work very reliably even in the dark. These features are unmatched by other competitors. SAE Level 3 automated driving helps improve comfort and safety on public roads.
*BMW Personal Pilot L3 is only available in combination with the relevant BMW Connected Drive service. The validity of this service is two years.
