Goldfish have good memories. And they even remember places and things fish. No, this is not a joke. This is exactly what an expert has researched and revealed.
Many people say ‘you have the memory of a goldfish’, meaning it as a pejorative, when in fact it is a compliment, says Professor Calum Brown of Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, who even said that people’s beliefs about memory for fish . is “ridiculous” because his research showed that one group of fish managed to remember all the escapees from the nets, according to curator.
Professor Brown is considered “a well-known proponent of fish intelligence”.
“This is not the case”
Brown said: “Wherever you go in the world, people have very low expectations of a goldfish’s memory. And I don’t think this is specifically about goldfish – I think goldfish generally symbolize fish. There is this common myth that fish don’t have good memories. And obviously, if they can’t remember anything, they can’t learn anything. This is not the case.”
The experiment
To better explain his claim, he built a miniature model to catch the fish in the nets, while also installing escape routes.
Mr. Brown found that over time the fish remembered better and better where the escape route was.
Not only that, the professor found evidence of long-term memory and stated that after putting the fish back into the same device 11 months later, they could still remember the escape route.
